![]() ![]() Sadly, only the first three books in the series are in print today, but I highly recommend tracking down all seven if you can. Upon rereading The Great Brain as an adult, I found it just as funny, suspenseful and hard to put down as I did when I was a kid. ![]() I read all seven of the books in Fitzgerald's series (an eighth, The Great Brain is Back, was published in 1995 after the author's death using notes left by Fitzgerald) as a child and still mourn the fact that they did not make it to adulthood with me. While the writing is vivid, Mayer's pictures bring the story to life. Although I didn't read Wilder's books until I was an adult and reading them out loud to my daughter, I am sure that as a child I was predisposed to like The Great Brain books because of my familiarity and love of Mercer Mayer's illustrations. First published in 1967, The Great Brain by John D Fitzgerald is a wonderful counterpart to Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series. ![]()

![]() Jane leaves the story dangling, unfortunately, since there’s not much point to it without knowing about Goodall’s adult impact (a small-print author’s note does provide some additional information) viewers will also need to check the copyright page to know that some of the included visual material is Goodall’s childhood work. Both texts are smooth and lucid, with McDonnell’s taking on a dreamy lyricism (“Jane could feel her own heart beating, beating, beating”) while Winter’s offers a gentle descriptive simplicity (“At night, after a supper of beans and tomatoes and onions, Jane listened to Mozart and Bach”). McDonnell’s focus is narrower, sticking largely to Goodall’s childhood and her fascination with animals in her backyard and in the books she read, while Winter expands her overview into Goodall’s work in Africa and her growing relationship with the Gombe chimpanzees. ![]() ![]() This spring brings us not one but two picture-book biographies about the great primate researcher Jane Goodall. ![]() ![]() ![]() What some people may not know, however, is that Princess Diana got her early revenge by cooperating with the 1992 tell-all book Diana: Her True Story. The Crown depicts her as an isolated young woman struggling with bulimia, who’s also freely mocked by numerous members of the royal family for her lack of intellectual curiosity and adaptability. Diana, however, suffered additional behind-the-scenes turmoil. (He’s also bad at fishing.) This personality switch accelerates during his ill-fated romance and marriage to Diana Spencer, who captivated the world with her wispy bangs and glamorous “people’s princess” aura while Charles was often relegated to the sidelines - which drove them both to numerous years of well-publicized adultery. The new season of The Crown, to put it delicately, is giving Prince Charles the worst press of his life since Tampongate: Despite being previously portrayed as a bumbling, soft-spoken lad who wants to marry Camilla Parker Bowles in season three, he’s now a bumbling, short-tempered asshole who still wants to marry Camilla Parker Bowles in season four. ![]() Photo: Tim Graham/Tim Graham Photo Library via Getty Images ![]() ![]() if his scruffy exterior and crazy ex-wife don't hold him back.īut maybe it's something in the water - unlikely romances seem to take root in Virgin River. So I owe a big thank you to Riley Redgate for all of that great rep! Additionally, her love interest is Korean-American and a lesbian, and there are several Latinx side characters. She’s also plus-size and pansexual, and that combination of representation is always fantastic to see. However, that wasn’t to say that it wasn’t at least enjoyable–it was a decent story, but it felt unnecessarily truncated.
